Cocaine and Heroin Content Determination with NIR

Confiscated street drug samples are mixtures with different drugs and cutting agents. Despite these different drug mixtures, exact NIR measurements are performed using the Buchi NIRFlex N-400 spectrometer. With Buchi NIRCal Chemometric Software only one calibration each for all heroin and all cocaine samples for a broad concentration range could be developed.

Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy finds application in quantitative and qualitative analysis of food products, allowing a rapid control of raw materials, a critical point in assuring product quality. An FT- NIR Spectrometer (NIRLab N-200, BÜCHI Labortechnik AG, Flawil, Switzerland) has been used to evaluate fat, protein, dry matter and ash content in thawed precooked tuna fish fillets, which are the raw material for the production of canned tuna fish. NIR spectra were recorded in reflectance mode from 4000 to 10000 cm-1 interval and the chemometric interpretation were performed using NIRCal 4.21.

Applying chemometric techniques for method development, which generally at least needs a certain degree of chemometric experience, is a big hurdle for the wider acceptance of Near-infrared spectroscopy. The NIRCal® Chemometric Software contains a comprehensive Calibration Wizard, which assists the user in developing robust calibrations without extensive chemometric knowledge. Calibrations become more objective and less dependent on the user?s knowledge.
