Foodstuff analysis
Nitrogen and Protein
Protein determination is one of the key analyses performed in the food industry. The samples require digestion with sulfuric acid to convert nitrogen into ammonium sulphate. After conversion to ammonia through the alkalinization with sodium hydroxide, the sample is distilled into a boric acid receiver by steam distillation, followed by a titration with sulphuric acid solution. The nitrogen content is multiplied by a sample-specific factor to obtain the protein content.

Environmental and agriculture applications
Nitrogen
Nitrogen is a main growth factor in water. If lake water containes too much nitrogen, there has to be a pollution from agriculture by manure or fertilizer, which leads to exponential growth of algae, consuming too much oxygen and therefore harming the other plants and animals in the water. The organic (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen = TKN) is determined by the classical Kjeldahl determination.
